PPB Clarifies: No Ban on Medicines, Review Ensures Safety
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has clarified its ongoing review of medical product registrations, dismissing misinformation about a ban on over 21,000 products. The process is a routine regulatory measure, not a restriction or ban, and aims to ensure the safety and quality of medicines in Kenya.
The PPB is currently reviewing approximately 9,000 registered products that meet national and international standards. This review, required every five years, is a standard regulatory process to ensure the continued safety and efficacy of medicines. The board has urged the public, healthcare professionals, and the media to disregard misleading reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate information.
The PPB has confirmed that no import ban exists, and medicine imports and distribution are continuing as normal. All marketing authorisation holders have until December 31, 2025, to complete the renewal process. The board has attributed the spread of misinformation to 'unscrupulous individuals and cartels' seeking to protect their own interests.
The PPB's review of medical product registrations is a routine, five-year process to maintain the quality and safety of medicines in Kenya. The public is advised to rely on official communication channels for accurate information. The review does not indicate a ban or restriction on any products, and imports and distribution continue as normal.
