Hamburg Central Station Knife Attack: Suspect's Background, Aftermath, and Details

Hamburg, Germany — Following a knife attack at Hamburg Central Station on Friday evening, which left 18 individuals injured, more details about the suspect's background are emerging. A spokesperson for the Lower Saxony Ministry of Health confirmed that the 39-year-old woman had been released from a psychiatric clinic in the Cuxhaven district the previous day. She had previously been a patient at the clinic.

According to the clinic, there was no medical finding at the time of her release that warranted continued detention. The suspect has since admitted to the attack before a judge, a spokesperson for the Hamburg Public Prosecutor's Office said upon request. She allegedly stabbed people randomly on the platform. A judge has ordered her detention in a psychiatric clinic, with the detention order citing attempted manslaughter in conjunction with dangerous bodily harm in 15 cases, according to the police.

The woman was found helpless in early May and was admitted to the clinic for three weeks. The ministry declined to comment on her illness, citing privacy rights and medical confidentiality.

Prior to her release, medical, legal, and social aspects were evaluated. The central question was if the patient might pose a danger to herself or others upon release. In this case, the doctors did not see a reason to keep the 39-year-old in the clinic since she sought no further voluntary treatment.

Three women, aged 24, 52, and 85, and a 24-year-old man were among the seriously injured. They are now in stable condition, as the police revealed on Saturday. Seven individuals were seriously injured, and another seven sustained minor injuries. Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher mentioned that some of the injured had already left the hospitals, but there was no further update on their health status as of Sunday.

The suspect does not appear to have any fixed residence, according to a spokesperson for the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Interior. She is believed to be originally from Lower Saxony. The police stated that the suspect showed no signs of political motivation. Instead, there are strong indications of a mental illness.

Two brave passers-by intervened during the attack, helping to prevent further harm. The suspect was quickly apprehended without resistance by law enforcement officers. Preliminary information suggests that the suspect acted alone, and the weapon used in the crime has been recovered.

Hamburg Central Station is one of Germany's busiest transportation hubs, with over half a million travelers daily. During Friday evening rush hour, it is typically crowded, especially considering the ongoing school holidays.

Since October 1, 2023, knives have been prohibited in the area surrounding the main station. Hamburg Central Station had been identified as one of Germany's most dangerous train stations in 2022, according to the Federal Police. However, the situation has improved since then, as reported officially, with a 24.2% decrease in violent incidents to 546 last year. Notably, the number of incidents involving a knife almost doubled, from 12 to 23 cases.

Regular train traffic resumed early Saturday morning, and the tracks are as busy as usual. There are only small bloodstains at the crime scene, between tracks 13 and 14, as a reminder of the brutal attack.

In psychiatric care, the release process generally involves medical assessment, treatment plan development, legal considerations, and family and community involvement, as part of ensuring patient safety and individual rights protection. In Germany, specific laws and regulations governing mental health care and release can be found in national mental health legislation.
