Public alert issued over potentially radioactive shrimp sold at Walmart

Headline: FDA Issues Recall Notice for Certain Great Value Brand Frozen Shrimp Due to Potential Radioactive Contamination

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning and recommended a recall of certain Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp sold at Walmart stores across multiple states. The recall is due to possible contamination with the radioactive isotope Cesium-137.

The affected products are from Indonesian supplier PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, also known as BMS Foods, and include specific lot codes and expiration dates:

  • Lot code: 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
  • Lot code: 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
  • Lot code: 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027

These shrimp products have been tested positive for the radioactive element Cesium-137 in several international ports, including Savannah, Miami, Los Angeles, and Houston. The affected Great Value frozen shrimp products are sold in various sizes, including 16-ounce bags, 2-pound bags, and 4-pound bags.

The affected products are sold under the Great Value brand of Walmart and are available in Walmart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia. The affected Great Value frozen shrimp products are Frozen Raw White Vannamei Shrimp and Frozen Raw Ez Peel Tail-On Farm-Raised White Vannamei Shrimp, primarily sold in 2-pound bags.

The FDA advises the public not to consume, sell, or serve these shrimp products and encourages consumers to discard them or return them to Walmart for a refund. Retailers and distributors are also advised to discard the affected products and not sell or serve them.

Although no products that tested positive for Cesium-137 have entered U.S. commerce, at least one sample tested positive, which the FDA says could pose a potential health concern. If someone suspects they have been exposed to high levels of cesium, they should consult their healthcare professional.

The FDA has denied entry to the country of the shrimp products that tested positive, but retailers like Walmart received shipments before the radioactive element was detected. The FDA is recommending that anyone who has recently purchased the affected lots of Great Value frozen shrimp from Walmart discard them and not consume or serve them.
