Radioactive Shrimp Sold at Walmart: Public Urged by FDA to Avoid Consumption
FDA Warns Against Certain Great Value Frozen Shrimp Due to Potential Radioactive Contamination
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning not to eat, sell, or serve certain Great Value raw frozen shrimp sold at Walmart. This advisory comes after the FDA received an alert from U.S. Customs and Border Protection about possible Cesium-137 detected in shipping containers at four U.S. ports.
The company that produced the affected Great Value raw frozen shrimp is PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, an Indonesian shrimp processor. Testing on frozen shrimp from this distributor also tested positive for Cesium-137.
In response, the FDA is working with distributors and retailers to recommend recalls of the affected shrimp. The FDA has also banned all products from BMS Foods from entering the U.S. until the company resolves the conditions that led to the violation.
The FDA has determined that the shrimp from BMS Foods violates the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act due to unsanitary conditions that may have led to Cesium-137 contamination. The agency is recommending a recall on all products from BMS Foods that were shipped after the company's shipping containers tested positive for Cesium-137.
It is important to note that no shrimp that has tested positive for Cesium-137 has entered the U.S. food supply, according to the FDA. However, exposure to large amounts of Cesium-137, as described by the EPA, can cause burns, acute radiation sickness, and even death.
Consumers who have purchased the affected Great Value raw frozen shrimp are advised to dispose of the product. The following Great Value brand frozen shrimp products are included in the recall:
- Great Value Breaded Frozen Cooked Shrimp
- Great Value Simply Seasoned Frozen Cooked Shrimp
- Great Value Tail On Frozen Cooked Shrimp
The FDA's press release did not provide further details about the potential Cesium-137 contamination or the recall. The agency encourages consumers to check the FDA's website for updates on the recall.
At this time, there is no information about any police investigation or discovery of bodies in relation to this incident. The FDA urges consumers to follow the advisory and not consume the affected Great Value raw frozen shrimp.
