Released: The water from Borlefzen's lake is now flowing freely

The swimming lake at the Vlotho camping site in Vlotho-Borlefzen is now open to bathers following a two-week ban due to the presence of green algae. The ban was lifted on September 3, 2025, after the district health department confirmed that the water quality meets the necessary standards.

As an EU bathing lake, the swimming lake in Borlefzen is subject to regular monitoring by the district health department. The lake's water quality is tested monthly to ensure it complies with the EU Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EG).

Recent water samples from the lake showed no exceedance of the limit values for green algae. Additionally, no visible traces of the algae are currently present in the water.

The ban was imposed due to the detection of green algae in the lake two weeks ago. High temperatures and a low water level of the Weser, along with a stagnant lake due to low inflow, may have contributed to the development of the algae.

To combat the algae growth, the city administration of Vlotho took immediate action. A so-called 'mowing boat' was used to remove green algae from the lake, and aeration pumps were deployed to increase the oxygen content of the water.

It is important to note that green algae can cause skin irritation, redness, or rashes in bathers. However, with the successful removal of the algae and the improvement in water quality, the lake is once again safe for swimming.

During the closure of the swimming lake, the Vlotho camping site continued to offer other facilities for its guests. The reopening of the swimming lake marks a return to normal operations for the camping site.

Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the refreshing waters of the swimming lake at the Vlotho camping site, knowing that the city administration and the district health department are committed to maintaining the highest standards of water quality and safety.
