'Sanaviation' aided in the well-being of 1800 Yakutians
In the vast and often harsh terrain of Yakutia, Russia, air ambulances are proving to be a vital lifeline for seriously ill or injured patients. These medical helicopters, such as the Russian Ansat helicopters, play a crucial role in the rapid evacuation of patients with serious medical conditions, including circulatory system diseases, severe injuries, burns, and frostbite.
The importance of air ambulances in Yakutia becomes evident when considering the region's extreme climate, where frostbite is a common risk. By minimising exposure time to severe cold, air ambulance evacuation reduces delays in receiving advanced medical treatment and enhances outcomes for burn and frostbite patients. It enables rapid transfer to appropriate intensive care centres, thus improving survival and recovery prospects.
Air ambulance services are equipped to handle patients with circulatory system issues and traumatic injuries by offering onboard medical support during flight, including monitoring and stabilisation. The National Air Ambulance Service, operating a significant fleet of Ansat medical helicopters, serves large and remote regions, likely including Yakutia and neighbouring areas.
Recent events in Yakutia underscore the importance of these services. In July, an incident occurred in the Neryungri district involving a "КамАЗ-вахтовка" falling from a steep cliff approximately 30 meters high. The Republican Center for Emergency Medicine was quickly dispatched to the scene, and all injured parties were evacuated by air ambulance. Sadly, 14 people died instantly, and 7 sustained serious injuries.
From January to July, 1,825 seriously ill or injured patients were evacuated from Yakutia's regions, with 834 transported to republican hospitals in Yakutsk. The majority of evacuations were due to circulatory system diseases - 781 cases.
Air ambulance services are based in key locations across Yakutia, including Yakutsk, Srednekolymsk, Batagay, Nurba, Mirny, Tiksi, Neryungri, and Lensk. These services enable swift assistance and evacuation of patients and injured individuals, overcoming geographical and climate challenges inherent to the region.
The work supporting these essential services is funded through the national project "Long and Active Life". Despite the challenges, air ambulances continue to save lives in Yakutia, making a significant difference in the lives of those who need it most.
