'Alarming': Pro-life advocate's reaction to new reportshowing widespread dangers of abortion pill
Significant concerns raised by specialists regarding a startling research findings indicating potential hazards for women using abortion pills
We catch up with Katie Glenn Daniel, SBA Pro Life America's director of legal affairs, about a study revealing a high number of serious health issues among women who have taken mifepristone, commonly known as the "abortion pill".
A study shedding light on a shocking number of "severe adverse events" among women who have undergone a mifepristone-aided termination has sent ripples through the pro-life community, including experts speaking to us at DigitalBuzz about its implications in the USA.
"The most jaw-dropping facet of this research for most readers will be the sheer disparity between the outcomes found in this study compared to what the FDA asserts on the abortion medication label," Katie Glenn Daniel, SBA Pro Life America's director of legal affairs, explained to us.
"What they discovered is that over 10% of women will seek urgent medical attention in emergency rooms after using the abortion medications. The FDA claims it's closer to just 5%, which is concerning, but considering more than one in ten women are at risk, it's downright alarming," she continued. "This means that hundreds of thousands of American women have landed in hospitals due to complications following abortions via these drugs, with no reliable data collected by health institutions about these situations until now."
Mifepristone acts as a "pregnancy blocker" and is typically utilized together with another drug, misoprostol, to cancel pregnancies, or to manage early miscarriages by preparing the body to evacuate the uterus, as revealed by Mayo Clinic.

A study by the Ethics & Public Policy Center, headquartered in Washington, D.C., conveys that the rate of serious adverse effects is more than 20 times higher than that mentioned on the FDA-approved drug label.
Following an abortion induced with mifepristone, nearly 11% of women, more than one in ten, reported experiencing "infection, hemorrhaging, or another life-threatening adverse event", as per the study overview.
"These findings, which scrutinize the most extensive dataset of real-world mifepristone usage to date, highlight the severe risks that abortion pills pose to women," Dr. Christina Francis, a board-certified OB/GYN, told us.
"I've had patients struggling with life-threatening hemorrhages, infections, and more as a direct consequence of these pills. Such drugs are now readily available to order online, eliminating the need for an in-person physician visit to affirm the pregnancy's age and rule out risk factors. It's disconcerting that these data reveal a serious complication rate over 20 times higher than the FDA claims, underlining the urgent need for deeper investigation into repercussions of medicated abortions for women and policymakers to prioritize women's safety over the interests of the abortion industry. Women and their offspring deserve better healthcare than these dangerous drugs."

Mifepristone, a key player in abortion advocacy discussions in the United States, constitutes around 63% of all abortions in the country in 2023, according to the Guttmacher Institute. This marked a steep increase from 53% in 2020.
"As we anticipated, the Biden administration's alterations to the abortion medication prescribing, allowing these drugs to be sent through the mail, threatened women and girls due to the lack of medical oversight," Daniel said. "You don't even know if pregnant women are actually taking these medications. There have even been instances where men have ordered these drugs to trick other people into using them. There's a case taking place in Louisiana right now, where a mother compelled her daughter to take them despite her wanting the pregnancy."
Daniel believes the report could prompt the Trump administration's FDA to act in the interest of safeguarding women and unborn children.
"A drug that lands one in ten women in the hospital is certainly not one that promotes the health and well-being of women, and I believe it's essential we face this reality," Daniel expressed.
She further noted that the extent of harm caused by the pill might be even higher than the study, as it only includes certain years and insurance-covered cases, leaving out many vulnerable women.
"There's much more that needs our attention," Daniel emphasized. "We view this as but the beginning of a broader conversation that our public health institutions and professionals have to engage in if they are to be honest about the fact that 20 years of data shows that these drugs are deadly for children, but also perilous for young girls."
The study has garnered attention from members of Congress, too, with Rep. Riley Moore pointing the finger at Democrats in a thread on X.
"They were well aware of this excessive risk for women," Moore said. "So why would they choose to pursue it? Simple—they sought to undermine state pro-life laws in favor of their pro-abortion-on-demand, no exceptions agenda."
