Slow Music Found to Boost Driver Alertness in Tunnels

A recent study has discovered that slow tempo music is the most effective background sound for drivers navigating tunnels. The research, conducted using immersive VR, found that this tempo reduces nervousness and prevents tiredness, making it the preferred choice for drivers.

The study, involving 40 young drivers, measured neurophysiological responses such as skin electrical conductance, heart rate, and EEG. It found that slow music helped drivers maintain alertness and focus, even in the challenging environment of a 5100-m-long tunnel with traffic in both directions.

Drivers responded by driving fastest to fast music and slowest to slow music. However, slow music was found to be the most beneficial in reducing driver tension and fatigue, making them less likely to speed or overtake. To enhance safety further, the study recommends playing sirens at tunnel entries, exits, and during emergencies to increase driver vigilance.

The combination of slow music throughout the tunnel and sirens at high-risk spots and times is the best solution for improving road safety in tunnels. This study provides valuable insights into driver behaviour and arousal, contributing to the development of effective strategies to keep drivers alert, relaxed, and focused in tunnels.
