"Supporting Safe Abortion Day: Protests Held in Duisburg"

On Saturday, September 27, 2023, four state-recognised pregnancy conflict counseling centers in Duisburg, Germany, will come together to host an event in the city's pedestrian zone on Königstraße (opposite the Forum), from 12 to 3 PM. This event is part of the international 'Safe Abortion Day,' an annual observance that takes place worldwide on September 28th, with the aim of raising awareness about the unsafe and illegal pregnancy terminations that claim the lives of thousands of women each year.

The participating centers include the Counseling and Therapy Center of the Health Department, the Evangelical Counseling Center Duisburg/Moers, Pro Familia Duisburg, and Frauenwürde Duisburg e.V./'Haus im Hof'. The counselors from these centres look forward to a lively exchange with many citizens and will provide detailed information on various topics, such as contraception, sexuality, pregnancy, couple problems, and the conditions under which pregnancy terminations are performed in countries where it is illegal.

In addition to the informative discussions, there will be an interactive 'make your own' button activity at the information booth. The counseling centres also offer free and unbiased counseling, as well as detailed information on possible legal and financial support for raising children, whether single or in a partnership.

The counselors will also inform the public about the hurdles a woman in Germany must overcome if she decides to have a pregnancy termination. The event aims to foster open dialogue and understanding about reproductive rights and the importance of safe and legal access to abortion services.

The 'Safe Abortion Day' has been observed since 2011, with the goal of raising awareness that in many countries, pregnancy terminations are medically unsafe because they are illegal. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 39,000 women die each year worldwide as a result. The event in Duisburg serves as a reminder of the global struggle for reproductive rights and the importance of accessible, safe, and legal abortion services.
