In the City of Gießen, a significant step forward has been taken in addressing the issue of sexual violence. Starting from September, a bus with a poster about the "Medical Immediate Help After Sexual Assault" project will be circulating the city. This initiative, led by the Women's and Equality Offices of the City of Gießen, is part of a broader campaign supported by the Hessian Ministry of Labor, Integration, Youth & Social Affairs.
Gießen is one of 14 model cities in Hesse participating in the Frankfurt Women's Emergency Call project. The project involves multiple local organisations providing comprehensive care and support for victims. The University Clinics of Gießen and Marburg, and the Forensic Institute at the Institute for Legal Medicine, are involved in providing medical care and evidence preservation.
The pharmacy at Ludwigsplatz is cooperating in providing medication as needed. Psychological and social care for victims is provided by the intervention center against domestic violence of SKF e.V., Pro Familia Gießen e.V., Gießen Hilfe e.V., and Wildwasser.
Medical care within the project remains fundamentally confidential. Neither the hospital nor a counseling center is able to file a report against a victim's wishes. Evidence materials are stored for a year, and only when a report is made are they handed over to the police for use in investigations.
Victims of sexual violence can anonymously have evidence preserved as part of their medical care in this project. This unique aspect offers victims the opportunity to create some distance before potentially filing a report. It is important to note that the responsibility for sexual violence always lies with the perpetrator.
The International Day against Violence program, taking place in November, aims to raise awareness that sexual violence is never the victim's fault. Clothing, appearance, or behaviour are not factors that determine responsibility for sexual violence.
It is unfortunate that the search results do not provide information on the leaders of the project. However, what is clear is that the City of Gießen is taking concrete steps to support victims of sexual violence and provide them with the care and resources they need.
