The Positive Effects of Physical Activity on Cognitive Function and Psychological Well-being

In these trying times, it is normal to seek solace at home, avoiding outside interactions. However, moving one's body is more crucial now than ever before. According to Samuel Browd, MD, PhD, a neurosurgeon and the director of the Sports Institute at UW Medicine, exercise can provide a substantial advantage.

"Exercise significantly decreases the burden of mental health issues," stated Dr. Browd. "A wealth of new research supports the benefits of physical activity for mental health and wellness."

In other words, regular exercise can alleviate or prevent anxiety and depression. It can help clear your mind and reduce stress. Additionally, it can enhance resilience.

The benefits of exercise on the brain are numerous. During physical activity, there is an increase in blood flow to the brain. Furthermore, the body releases helpful chemicals, such as endocannabinoids, which aid in mood enhancement and stress reduction.

These self-produced chemicals, especially anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), influence brain functions by binding to cannabinoid receptors, thereby modulating stress and reward circuits essential for mood regulation.

Exercise has been shown in some studies to be as effective as antidepressants in alleviating symptoms of mild to moderate depression. Dr. Browd refers to exercise as "medicine."

"The benefits of physical activity span from mental health and wellness to disease prevention," Dr. Browd asserted.

The benefits of exercise extend beyond mental health. It also safeguards neurological and cognitive health. According to Anny Lin, MD, a neurologist at UW Medical Center - Montlake, there is growing scientific evidence suggesting the advantages of physical activity for various neurological diseases.

Studies indicate that exercise can improve neuroplasticity, vital for overall brain health and the diminishment of cognitive decline risk. A 2024 report in the Lancet advises that individuals who participate in sports and exercise are less likely to develop dementia.

So, how much exercise is required to benefit mental health? Moderate to vigorous exercises, which elevate the heart rate for 30 to 60 minutes, three to five times a week, are recommended. Higher-intensity workouts such as strength training, cycling, swimming, or running provide the most significant mental health benefits.

However, less intense activities, like yoga or walking, also offer mental health advantages. Dr. Browd notes that any form of exercise is better than none.

Though exercise can significantly improve mental health, it should not be considered a complete solution for everyone. If you have concerns about mental health care, consult your doctor. Overall, physical activity benefits both your body and mind, so go ahead and get moving!
