Thomas More Athletes Persevere: High Academic Performance Despite Pandemic Challenges
Thomas More University's student-athletes have shown remarkable resilience and adaptability, maintaining high academic performance despite the heartbreak of cancelled seasons and the challenges of remote learning. As the world marks the five-year anniversary of COVID-19's introduction, the university reflects on the perseverance of its athletes and the ongoing presence of the virus.
In the 2019/2020 season, Thomas More's Athletic Department boasted an impressive average GPA of 3.3, with multiple student-athletes earning the prestigious title of Academic All Americans. Despite the pandemic's disruption, the wrestling team and a track and field student-athlete managed to complete their seasons. However, the joy of team and sport was not fully experienced that year.
The men's and women's basketball teams had been eagerly preparing for their respective tournaments when, in late February 2020, collegiate basketball tournaments were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Spring sports also fell victim to the cancellations, leaving many student-athletes without a season. A recent misdiagnosed COVID-19 case as a sinus infection serves as a reminder of the virus's ongoing presence.
The essence of a champion, as demonstrated by Thomas More's student-athletes, is resilience and adaptability in the face of heartbreak and challenges. While the pandemic delayed the joy of team and sport, it did not deny it. As the university looks ahead, it does so with pride in its student-athletes' academic achievements and a determination to return to full competition.
