In the heart of Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty, residents have been complaining about smog covering the megacity. The source of this smog has been traced back to a burning solid waste landfill near the Almaty-Konayev road.

The Regional Akimat and the Ministry of Emergency Situations have been actively involved in addressing this issue. The local municipal fire department and waste management authorities have been tasked with extinguishing and clearing the burning waste heap along Almaty-Konayev Street. However, reaching the sources of the smoldering is not easy due to the fire burning at a great depth.

From September 15 to 17, air quality tests were conducted, and 288 samples were taken in populated areas within a 35 km radius of the Almaty-Konayev road. On September 17, repeat studies at the same points showed compliance with norms. However, from September 15 to 16, some samples showed excesses of acceptable norms for certain substances.

Residents, especially children, the elderly, and those with chronic respiratory system diseases, have been given preventive recommendations. The Akimat reported no cases of poisoning or visits to medical facilities from September 15 to 17.

The smog was attributed to smoke from the burning waste dump in the region. Monitoring of air quality continues, depending on wind direction. The timeline for the burning waste dump and the air quality tests is not specified in the article.

The reports were further reported by CMN.KZ. The Ministry of Emergency Situations is working diligently to address this issue, but the specific measures taken to extinguish the fire have not been disclosed. The residents of Almaty are urged to follow the preventive recommendations and stay updated on the situation.
