Toddler endures horrific burns due to boiling oil incident in Torre de Moncorvo

In Torre de Moncorvo, a two-year-old girl sustained severe burns on multiple body parts from boiling oil at her home on Monday. The fire department confirmed the incident, which was reported to the local fire department through the Emergency Urgent Patient Orientation Center (CODU) at 19:00.

The burn injuries were classified as second and third-degree. Emergency medical teams from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) and firefighters stabilized the child before she was airlifted at 21:15 to São João Hospital in Porto. The INEM helicopter based in Macedo de Cavaleiros facilitated the transportation.

Approximately ten firefighters, along with four vehicles, were present at the scene. The INEM's immediate life support ambulance from Vila Nova de Foz Côa also joined the rescue effort. The GNR assumed command of the incident.

When treating severe burns from boiling oil, the first aid and treatment procedures must be immediate, cautious, and followed by prompt medical attention. For second-degree burns, it is crucial to cool the burn, clean it gently, cover it appropriately, and manage pain while avoiding harmful home remedies. Third-degree burns should not be cooled with water, but rather covered with sterile dressings, elevated, and closely observed for breathing problems. The child's injuries required emergency hospitalization for specialized treatment.
