Two Separate Drownings at Celebration Key Bahamas Resort Under Investigation

The Royal Bahamas Police Force is currently investigating two apparent drownings that occurred at the Celebration Key Bahamas resort on August 15, 2025. The victims, both American tourists in their 70s, drowned separately within a three-hour span.

The first incident involved a 79-year-old man who was snorkeling off one of the Celebration Key beaches. The second incident occurred at the resort’s pool, where a 74-year-old woman was found unresponsive. Lifeguards attempted CPR in both cases, but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful, and the victims were pronounced deceased by medical professionals.

The identities of the victims have not been released at this time. However, it is known that the man was a passenger on the Carnival Cruise Line ship Mardi Gras, while the woman was a passenger aboard the Carnival Elation. Both victims were travelling with their families.

Autopsies are pending to determine the exact cause and manner of death. Carnival Cruise Line is cooperating with authorities in the investigations and has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims. The company emphasizes that its resort staff includes trained lifeguards and medical professionals who respond promptly to emergencies.

The incidents have raised concerns about safety at the new $600 million Celebration Key resort, which opened in July 2025. The Royal Bahamas Police Force is leading the investigations into both deaths. No further official findings or updates have been released since these initial steps in the investigation.

In a separate incident, a 74-year-old American woman died at a beach resort in Belize on Friday, according to police. This report was contributed to by Victoria Arancio and Anslem Gibbs. No further information was provided about this incident.

A shark attack was also reported on Saturday, involving a 63-year-old American who was spearfishing off Big Grand Cay in the Bahamas. The victim was attacked around 1 p.m., but no further details about the incident or the victim's condition have been released.

As the investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of all guests at the Celebration Key Bahamas resort. Carnival Cruise Line has stated that it is working closely with authorities to gather more information and to support the families of the victims during this difficult time.
