Personal Baggage: Cancer hauled in Ulrike von der Groeben's family
Just when she thought she'd be kickin' back with a good book and some exercise, Ulrike revealed on "Kölner Treff" that her retirement plans were a bunch of hooey. "I ain't doin' nothin!'" she said. But, lo and behold, she penned a book! And in it, she shares some tear-jerkin' tales about loss.
"Cancer took down several of my peoples, including my sister Ula, who's a year younger than me," the Grimme Prize winner confesses. A tumor caused a bowel blockage, but emergency surgery and chemotherapy saved her. Now, she's enjoyin' her early retirement.
Cancer claimed Ulrike von der Groeben's mother at 60
Her mom, sadly, never saw the official retirement age. "She kicked the bucket from cancer at 60. It happened real fast, from diagnosis to death, only eleven months passed," she recalls. Her mother's death hit her dad hard.
After a rough mournin' phase, he found love again, writes von der Groeben in her book. But then, cancer came knockin' at his door too. "He had to undergo several surgeries. [...] He decided against further treatments and called it a day at home at 76," the journalist writes about her family's cancer battle.
