Urgent Appeal: The Reef-World Foundation Requires Your Assistance
The Reef-World Foundation, a UK-based charity dedicated to marine conservation, is leading the charge in promoting environmentally friendly practices in the diving and snorkeling industry. They are the international coordinator of the UN Environment Programme's Green Fins initiative, which sets internationally recognised environmental standards for these activities.
Green Fins aims to make sustainable diving the social norm, offering practical, low-cost alternatives to harmful practices like anchoring, fish feeding, and chemical pollution. By encouraging and empowering members of the diving industry to reduce negative environmental impacts, Green Fins helps make corals healthier and more resilient to climate change.
The initiative is run in partnership with 11 National Governments and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). It enables policy makers to identify areas of high environmental risk within the industry and work with business owners to find a suitable solution to local threats.
Reef-World provides a suite of tools and materials to help educate dive operators, dive professionals, and divers about how they can be more environmentally friendly when diving. They also offer education and capacity building assistance to environmental champions within the diving industry and local communities.
To help improve education and awareness around coral reef conservation as part of The Reef-World Foundation's Green Fins initiative, they are asking divers worldwide to fill out a short survey about their media habits and views on learning more about the environment and sustainable diving practices.
You can find the survey on the Reef-World Foundation's official website or through partner dive operators involved in the Green Fins program. Dive centers and tour operators certified by Green Fins often promote these surveys to guests as part of their conservation efforts. Engaging with local dive shops or organizations involved in reef conservation, such as Reef Renewal or Adopt The Blue, may also facilitate survey participation.
By completing the survey, you help provide valuable data that guides environmental education, advocacy, and management strategies aiming to reduce the negative impact of marine tourism on coral reefs.
Stay updated with Reef-World and Green Fins on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. For more information about Reef-World's Green Fins initiative, visit www.reef-world.org or www.greenfins.net.
