VFL athlete shares life-saving stem cell donation news of the day

In a selfless act, professional footballer Fridolin Wagner of VfL Osnabrück donated stem cells at the University Hospital in Leipzig, Germany on July 28, 2022. The donation process, similar to dialysis, took approximately three to five hours and yielded around 300 milliliters of stem cells and some blood plasma.

Wagner's decision to donate stem cells was not made lightly. He had registered years ago through his wife, and the request for him to donate came from DKMS in early 2022. This act of generosity has made him part of the globally committed stem cell donor community, potentially saving the life of a person suffering from blood cancer.

Every twelve minutes, a person in Germany receives a blood cancer diagnosis, and a stem cell transplant is often their only chance of survival. To increase the number of potential donors and save more lives, DKMS has now registered over 12.5 million potential stem cell donors.

If you are interested in registering as a stem cell donor, the process is simple. Visit the official DKMS website, check your eligibility (usually aged 17-55, healthy), and then request a free cheek swab kit. After receiving the kit, follow the instructions to take a cheek swab sample and return it by mail. If you are a matching donor for a patient in need, DKMS will contact you for further testing and potential donation.

By taking a few minutes to register, you could potentially save a life. So, take the first step today and join the stem cell donor community. Let's work together to give hope and a second chance at life to those in need.

  1. Despite his busy schedule in sports, particularly football in European leagues, Fridolin Wagner's selfless act of donating stem cells demonstrates his commitment to health-and-wellness, extending beyond the field.
  2. His donation could potentially save the life of a person suffering from blood cancer, further emphasizing the importance of medical-conditions in stem cell donation.
  3. As a stem cell donor, like Fridolin Wagner, you contribute to the fight against blood cancer and health issues that otherwise might be incurable.
  4. By being part of the registered donors with DKMS, whether you are a professional footballer or not, you have the power to make a significant impact on a person's health-and-wellness and well-being.
