Virtual Meetings Gain Popularity Among Support Communities

In a remarkable shift towards digital engagement, over 21 Parkinson's NSW Support Groups have transitioned to regular meetings via the video-chat application Zoom. This innovative move has not only bridged geographical gaps but also fostered a sense of camaraderie among members, as some initial reluctance has given way to fun-filled virtual gatherings complete with themed meetings and funny hats.

The driving force behind this digital transformation is Support Group Coordinator Felicity Jones, who assists Group Leaders in setting up Zoom meetings and inviting participants. Felicity also facilitates these meetings, helping people familiarise themselves with this new way of connecting.

To set up a Zoom meeting, the process is straightforward. First, create a Zoom account, choose a plan that suits your needs, and plan your meeting by setting a topic, choosing a time, and inviting participants. Then, create a Zoom meeting, invite participants, and conduct the meeting by managing participants, engaging them, and recording the session (optional). Finally, follow up with a post-meeting summary and outlining any action items or next steps.

For assistance in setting up Zoom meetings for Support Group participants, Carers, or Leadership Teams, contact Felicity Jones via email (felicity.jones@our website) or phone (8051 1900). It's worth noting that Zoom can be used on any computer or smartphone, making it accessible for everyone.

The success of these virtual meetings has not gone unnoticed, with representatives from the Council of the Ageing (COTA) and Carers NSW joining recent Zoom meetings. The initial Leader Zoom meeting attracted 29 Leadership Team (Committee) members from 23 different Groups, and a newly launched Support Group Leader Zoom meeting takes place every two weeks.

Moreover, Zoom provides opportunities for linking in guests from other organisations for presentations and conversations, similar to a guest speaker at a face-to-face meeting. This feature not only enriches the virtual meetings but also opens up a world of possibilities for learning and collaboration.

Laurelle from the Port Stephens (formerly Tomaree) Support Group participated in her first Zoom meeting and found it easy to navigate. She, like many others, has discovered the benefits of virtual meetings, which not only provide a platform for support and discussion but also offer a sense of community and connection in these challenging times.

In conclusion, the adoption of Zoom by Parkinson's NSW Support Groups marks a significant step forward in digital engagement. By embracing this technology, these groups are ensuring that no one feels isolated, and everyone has the opportunity to connect, share experiences, and support each other, regardless of their location.

Support Group Coordinator Felicity Jones has utilized the science of technology by implementing Zoom for mental-health support groups, enhancing health-and-wellness initiatives amidst unprecedented times. In a recent meeting, Laurelle from the Port Stephens Support Group lauded Zoom for fostering a sense of community, stating, "Virtual meetings offer a platform for support, discussion, and connection that seamlessly integrates with our everyday lives." Furthermore, these Zoom meetings have attracted representatives from various organizations, promoting ongoing learning and collaboration in the field of mental-health support.
