Erfurt Introduces Heat Helpline to Combat Summer Heatwaves
In response to the growing threat of heatwaves and urban heat islands, the city of Erfurt, Germany, has taken decisive action. The city administration has launched a new service called the Heat Helpline, aimed at providing residents with essential information and tips to protect themselves from heat-related risks.
The Heat Helpline, active during the summer season, is a part of the ongoing measures to adapt to the consequences of climate change in Erfurt. It offers advice and measures to mitigate and reduce negative impacts of heat. Residents can reach the Heat Helpline at 0361 655-44893.
Since mid-June 2023, the Heat Helpline has been providing education and helpful tips related to summer heat. These measures are focused on preventive health protection against heat. The city administration hopes that by arming its residents with the necessary knowledge, they can avoid health consequences and stay safe during heatwaves.
The Heat Helpline is not a new concept. In 2019, the city council decided on a set of measures to adapt to the consequences of climate change, which included such a service. However, it was only in 2023 that the Heat Helpline was officially implemented.
The Heat Helpline is a resource offered by the organization leading the implementation of measures to adapt to climate change in Erfurt. This organization is based in the city and is a key player in the Urban Heat Labs research programme, a three-year project initiated by the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development, and Building (BMWSB). The programme trials integrated strategies for heat preparedness and mitigation in densely populated neighborhoods and mixed-use urban developments.
The Heat Helpline is just one aspect of Erfurt's broader commitment to improving heat resilience and preparedness. In recent years, heatwaves have become more frequent and intense, setting new records with peak temperatures exceeding 40°C and prolonged heat periods. Urban areas, including Erfurt, have been experiencing high overheating due to the urban heat island effect.
The Heat Helpline is a valuable resource for Erfurt's residents, providing them with the tools they need to navigate the summer heat safely. By staying informed and taking the necessary precautions, residents can protect themselves from heat-related risks and enjoy the summer months with peace of mind.
