In the bustling area of Ashok Vihar, Delhi, a tragic incident unfolded on March 17. During ongoing sewer cleaning work, a sanitation worker lost their life, and three others were hospitalized due to inhaling toxic gas.

The exact cause of the toxic gas remains a mystery, but the incident has sparked a series of events that have led to the removal of the Madrasi Camp, a slum settlement located on the banks of the Barapullah drain.

For several days, construction work had been ongoing in the area, with the aim of installing proper sewer lines and drainage systems to address waterlogging and unhygienic conditions. The reason for the removal of Madrasi Camp was to facilitate the cleaning of the Barapullah drain, a critical measure to prevent flood disasters in Delhi.

CM Rekha Gupta commented on the incident, expressing her condolences and emphasizing the priorities of continuous supply of clean drinking water, construction and improvement of roads, and adequate street lighting.

The manager of Brijgopal Construction Company, who was questioned by the police regarding the accident, has not been named in the available reports. The police are currently investigating the incident and have inspected the site.

It's worth noting that this isn't an isolated incident. Several slum areas in Delhi have been demolished for constructing new buildings and laying down sewer lines.

In a positive development, the residents of Madrasi Camp have been allotted houses and shifted. The High Court had issued multiple directives to remove Madrasi Camp, and the court ordered its removal four times.

Cleaning of the Barapullah drain is a crucial step towards improving the living conditions and preventing future disasters in Delhi. The authorities are hopeful that this incident will serve as a wake-up call to prioritize safety measures in all construction and maintenance work.
