Workers' Safety Precautions Expanded: European Commission Proposes Directive Against Radiation Hazards

The "Speedweek" (also known as the Blitzermarathon), a nationwide speed enforcement campaign, is currently underway in Germany. Organised by police authorities, this initiative is designed to promote road safety by reducing speeding and raising public awareness of the dangers associated with exceeding speed limits.

Purpose

The primary goal of the Speedweek is to decrease traffic accidents, injuries, and fatalities. It aims to encourage drivers to adopt safer, more responsible driving habits, not just during the enforcement days, but continuously thereafter.

Scope

During the Speedweek, speed checks are intensified across many areas. Enforcement includes the use of mobile and fixed speed cameras, police radar controls, and sometimes new or less frequent speed monitoring locations. This focused "speed control blitz" demonstrates the widespread presence of speed enforcement and the risks of non-compliance.

Participating Regions

The Blitzermarathon is carried out nationwide, involving police forces from all 16 federal states (Länder) of Germany. Coordination happens under federal and regional traffic safety authorities, ensuring that many cities, towns, and highways participate simultaneously.

Impact on Road Safety

By publicizing the campaign beforehand, it serves as a deterrent which encourages drivers to slow down voluntarily. Regular evaluations after these campaigns have shown a temporary reduction in average vehicle speeds and a decrease in speed-related accidents during the enforcement period. In the longer term, it promotes a culture of safer driving and continual adherence to speed limits, helping reduce serious accidents, injuries, and fatalities on German roads.

Notable Participants

Some federal states in Germany, including Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt, and Schleswig-Holstein, are participating in the summer Speedweek. Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of the Interior, Tamara Zieschang, emphasizes the importance of the Speedweek.

Special Considerations

Areas such as schools, nursing homes, and clinics receive significantly more controls on accident-prone sections of roads and high-risk areas during the Speedweek. The summer Speedweek is taking place during the summer holidays, and most federal states do not provide advance information about the locations of the controls.

The European Roads Policing Network supports the Roadpol speed control week, which runs until the 10th of August. Other European countries also participate in the Speedweek initiative, although the extent of participation varies among the states.

For years, driving too fast has been the number one cause of fatal traffic accidents in Germany. The Speedweek is an essential tool in the fight against this persistent issue, aiming to make speeding less socially acceptable and more risky through widespread, visible police controls across all German regions.

  1. To complement the efforts in reducing speeding and promoting road safety, various workplace-wellness programs could integrate health-and-wellness initiatives, such as fitness-and-exercise routines, to encourage employee adherence to speed limits, fostering a culture of responsible driving both on and off the job.
  2. To further reinforce the importance of road safety, German police authorities could extend their Speedweek campaign to include collaborations with health-and-exercise facilities and providers, offering discounted memberships or fitness classes for drivers who commit to adopting safer driving habits, thus contributing to their overall well-being and wellness.
