Zoo employee perishes following leopard attack in Jerusalem
In a shocking incident on Friday morning, a leopard at the Biblical Zoo in Jerusalem attacked and killed a zookeeper during a routine enrichment preparation activity for the leopards.
The victim, identified as 36-year-old Uriel Nuri, was found unconscious and suffering from severe neck injuries. Despite immediate medical attention from United Hatzalah medics and later Magen David Adom (MDA) medics and paramedics, he was later declared dead at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.
The incident occurred at 9:55 AM during a behind-the-scenes tour for visitors. One of the leopards managed to exit the leopard house into the inner yard and attacked the zookeeper.
The zoo is currently conducting a thorough investigation to understand how the leopard managed to get into the yard. Preliminary findings suggest a lapse or failure in the containment strategies, such as a door or gate not properly secured or unexpected animal behavior during feeding/enrichment activities.
Typically, zoological safety protocols include secure enclosures, double-door entry systems for staff access, feeding through protected barriers, and avoiding direct animal contact during non-emergency situations. However, it appears that these measures were breached in this unfortunate incident.
Police forces from the Moriah Station in the Jerusalem District were dispatched to the scene to investigate the incident, and Israel Police are also assisting with the investigation.
The Biblical Zoo has expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the victim and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. This tragic incident is a reminder of the inherent risks involved in working with wild animals and the importance of strict safety protocols.
