Zoo Leipzig euthanizes three cubborn tigers
Leipzig Zoo Euthanizes Amur Tiger Cubs Due to Mother's Inability to Care
In a heartbreaking turn of events, three Amur tiger cubs born at Leipzig Zoo had to be euthanized just a few days after their birth. The mother, a first-time tigress named Yushka, refused to care for or feed her cubs, leading to their weakened state and eventual starvation.
Yushka, an inexperienced tigress, initially attended to her cubs after giving birth on Wednesday evening. However, within hours, she turned away from them, failing to nurse them and trigger a stimulus for milk production. Over the next two days, the cubs became chilled and weak, and their condition did not improve.
The zoo's veterinarian, Andreas Bernhard, made the difficult decision to euthanize the cubs to prevent them from suffering. The zoo director, Jörg Junhold, explained that a hand-rearing option was not considered due to appropriate wildlife husbandry.
Despite this tragic incident, Leipzig Zoo remains committed to the preservation of the Amur tiger species. The zoo plans to continue breeding attempts with Yushka, hoping that she will gain maternal experience and contribute naturally to the survival of the species through future litters.
Jörg Junhold expressed optimism, believing that Yushka will be capable of raising her cubs naturally in the future. He emphasized the zoo's scientific commitment to breeding without human intervention, so breeding by keepers remains out of the question.
The behaviour exhibited by Yushka is not uncommon in the animal kingdom, where first-time mothers sometimes struggle with caring for their offspring. However, this unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in conservation efforts, even with experienced staff and state-of-the-art facilities.
