Zoo Leipzig: Following the demise of Kio and Kibara, their absence leaves no room for doubt.
A Shocking Loss: Gorillas Kio and Kibara at Leipzig Zoo
Word spread like wildfire when gorilla Kio met his untimely end at the Leipzig Zoo. To add to the sorrow, Kibara, another precious member of the troop, suffered a similar fate just a week later. The grief was palpable, extending beyond the zoo's walls. But what exactly took these magnificent creatures from us? Human error or disease?
Fast forward a few weeks, the mystery has been unveiled.
The Heartbreaking Truth: Shattering News from Leipzig Zoo
During the end of March, Kio's passing sent shockwaves throughout the zoo community. The staff and keepers mourned deeply. One week later, the agony deepened as Kibara succumbed to her deteriorating health (while we reported then). The veterinarians suspected intestinal failure in Kibara, while the tests on Kio were still ongoing.
Now, more than a month later, we have the undeniable answer. The duo fell victim to sepsis, triggered by ruthless "E. coli bacteria" that secreted toxic substances, causing severe damage to their intestines. The Leipzig Zoo confirmed this grim reality on Friday, 23rd May, in their official report. The priority since then has been to shield the remaining gorillas from such a tragic fate!
A Grief-Stricken Realm - "Shocked and Extremely Sorrowful"
The anxiety for the remaining animals was high. The loss of their companions had a significant impact on them. Abeeku, the silverback, displayed unusual behavior, while Kumili, a female gorilla, seemed to struggle with coping after Kio and Kibara's demise. She also occasionally lost her appetite. Was she too falling ill?
Can the Others be Saved?
With heav hearts, vets, and keepers sprang into action. They introduced various drinks with substitute nutrients, administered supplements to stabilize the intestinal flora, and dedicated constant efforts by the keepers who fed them small portions regularly throughout the day. And voila, their efforts bore fruit.

"We are relieved that tranquility has returned to the four-member group and we have been able to restore normal feeding routines," stated Dr. Bernhard, the veterinarian. The psychological trauma is likely to linger in the animals for some time - they have lost their dear friends. However, at present, there appears to be no reason to fear another crisis at the zoo.
